Glo Premier League side, Enyimba of Aba on Sunday evening lost to Real Bamako of Mali in the first round of the CAF Champions League played in Aba.
The two time African champions who did not concede a goal in the league at their home ground last season took the lead in the first half through Sibi Gwar. The forward have now scored three goals in three Champions League games for the Aba millionaires. However, the goal was the only bright side in a generally poor showing by the former Nigerian champions.
The Malians equalized in the second half through Moutar Cisse. The people’s Elephant were unable to establish any form of dominance on the game as Real Bamako took control of proceedings. The Aba fans that were used to seeing their team bully opponents at their home ground were miffed by the team’s performance and soon took to booing Enyimba.
The open display of displeasure by the home fans seems to energize the visitors as they took the lead through Amadu Samake to make it 2-1 to Real Bamako.
Still there was little fight or urgency from the People’s Elephants as they were too feeble to launch an adequate response to the Malian onslaught.
The match ended in defeat for Enyimba and they are now required to put up a good performance in Mali in seven days if they want to keep their CAF Champions League hopes alive.
