Cameroon head coach Hugo Broos spoke after his team suffered a shocking 4-0 loss against Nigeria in their Group B qualifier in Uyo on Friday.
After the loss, The Indomitable Lions dropped to third place with only two points while Nigeria topped the group with nine points followed by Zambia in second place with four points.
“If we had won this game, we would have a chance, but we lost it and I hope everyone will learn from this,” he said. “Why should we have a chance to the World Cup ? We need to win all three games and Nigeria have to lose all three games, I don’t think that will happen.”
Broos, who defeated Egypt to win the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon earlier this year , pointed out that the second leg against the Super Eagles will only be a match of honour for his team now that Cameroon’s hopes for the World Cup are over.
“There is no pressure anymore on Monday. Nigeria have nine points, we have two points,” he added. “I just hope my players will have the same mentality that I have, that they will fight on Monday till the last minute to beat Nigeria.”
Cameroon played at seven FIFA World Cups and their best performance was at the 1990 World Cup where they reached the quarterfinals.
Both teams will clash at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, Cameroon on today.
